Type 1 diabetes associated autoimmunity.
2016
Diabetes mellitus is increasing in prevalence worldwide. The economic costs are considerable given the cardiovascular complications and co-morbidities that it may entail. Type 1 diabetes (T1D) is a chronic autoimmune disease characterized by the loss of insulin-producing pancreatic β-cells. The pathogenesis of T1D is complex and multifactorial and involves a genetic susceptibility that predisposes to abnormal immune responses in the presence of ill-defined environmental insults to the pancreatic islets. Genetic background may affect the risk for autoimmune disease and patients with T1D exhibit an increased risk of other autoimmune disorders such as autoimmune thyroid disease, Addison's dise…
Chromogranin Serves as Novel Biomarker of Endocrine and Gastric Autoimmunity
2020
Abstract Context The glycoprotein chromogranin A (CgA) is expressed by endocrine and neuroendocrine cells. High levels of serum CgA serve as markers of neuroendocrine tumors (NET), but its role in autoimmunity has not been assessed. Objective To investigate CgA utility as a marker of endocrine autoimmunity. Methods CgA serum levels were evaluated in 807 consecutive unselected participants (cross-sectional study) with the time-resolved amplified cryptate emission technology. Results Serum CgA concentrations were increased in 66%, 39%, 38%, and 24% of patients with NET, type 1 diabetes (T1D), autoimmune gastritis (AG) and autoimmune polyendocrinopathy (AP), respectively. Compared with healthy…
Thyroid-associated orbitopathy is linked to gastrointestinal autoimmunity
2014
Summary Common autoimmune disorders tend to co-exist in the same subjects and cluster in families. The objective of this study was to determine the prevalence of autoimmune co-morbidity in patients with autoimmune thyroid disease (AITD) with and without thyroid-associated orbitopathy (TAO). This was a cross-sectional study conducted at an academic tertiary referral centre. Of 1310 patients with AITD [n = 777 or 59% with Graves' disease (GD) and n = 533, 41% with Hashimoto's thyroiditis (HT)] followed at a specialized joint thyroid–eye out-patient clinic, 176 (13·4%) had an adult type of the autoimmune polyglandular syndrome, 129 (9·8%) type 1 diabetes, 111 (8·5%) coeliac disease, 60 (4·6%) …
Antivielas pret parietālajām šūnām un iekšējo faktoru kuņģa vēža pacientiem
2022
Ievads. APCA un anti-IF an…
Gastric cancer in autoimmune gastritis: A case-control study from the German centers of the staR project on gastric cancer research
2020
Objectives Patients with autoimmune gastritis (AIG) are reported to have an increased risk of developing gastric cancer (GC). In this study, we assess the characteristics and outcomes of GC patients with AIG in a multicenter case-control study. Methods Between April 2013 and May 2017, patients with GC, including cancers of the esophagogastric junction (EGJ) Siewert type II and III, were recruited. Patients with histological characteristics of AIG were identified and matched in a 1:2 fashion for age and gender to GC patients with no AIG. Presenting symptoms were documented using a self-administered questionnaire. Results Histological assessment of gastric mucosa was available for 572/759 GC …
ATP4A autoimmunity and Helicobacter pylori infection in children with type 1 diabetes
2014
Summary Persistent presence of ATP4A autoantibodies (ATP4AA) directed towards parietal cells is typical for atrophic body gastritis (ABG), an autoimmune disease associated with type 1 diabetes. We assessed whether Helicobacter pylori (Hp) infection might be associated with positivity for ATP4AA in children with type 1 diabetes. Sera were collected from 70 (38♀) type 1 diabetes children [aged 13·2 ± 4·5 years, age at diagnosis 8·8 ± 4·3 years, diabetes duration 4·5 ± 3·8 years, mean HbA1c 7·8 ± 1·6% (62 ± 17·5 mmol/mol)] seen at the regional diabetes clinic in Katowice, Poland. Patients were tested concurrently for Hp infection by means of a 13C urea breath test. ATP4AA were measured using a…
Autoimmune polyendocrine syndrome type 1: an Italian survey on 158 patients
2021
Abstract Background Autoimmune Polyglandular Syndrome type 1 (APS-1) is a rare recessive inherited disease, caused by AutoImmune Regulator (AIRE) gene mutations and characterized by three major manifestations: chronic mucocutaneous candidiasis (CMC), chronic hypoparathyroidism (CH) and Addison’s disease (AD). Methods Autoimmune conditions and associated autoantibodies (Abs) were analyzed in 158 Italian patients (103 females and 55 males; F/M 1.9/1) at the onset and during a follow-up of 23.7 ± 15.1 years. AIRE mutations were determined. Results The prevalence of APS-1 was 2.6 cases/million (range 0.5–17 in different regions). At the onset 93% of patients presented with one or more component…
Helicobacter pyloriinfection and nonmalignant diseases
2017
A substantial decrease in Helicobacter pylori-associated peptic ulcer disease has been observed during the last decades. Drug-related ulcers as well as idiopathic ulcers are becoming predominant and are more refractory to treatment; however, H. pylori infection still plays an important role in ulcer bleeding and recurrence after therapy. The effect of H. pylori eradication upon functional dyspepsia symptoms has been reviewed in this article and generally confirms the results of previous meta-analyses. Additional evidence suggests a lack of impact upon the quality of life, in spite of improvement in symptoms. The association of H. pylori with gastroesophageal reflux disease and Barrett's eso…
Autoimmune gastritis among T1D individuals – important association?
2015
